Re: County Government Week

Dear Mr. DiVincenzo:

CWA Local 1081, the Union representing the non-managerial employees of the Essex County Division of Welfare, respectfully requests you assiduously scrutinize the attached article published within today’s edition of the Asbury Park Press entitled “County Government Week”. “First celebrated in 1991, the week marks an annual celebration of county governments and the work of their employees and is also held to raise public awareness and understanding about the roles and responsibilities of more than 3,000 counties nationwide.”

Our Union civilly suggests your Administration conscientiously consider both the prestige and practicability of affording those whom live, and/or work and/or do business within Essex County the indubitable justification for the celebration of the work of the employees of the County, as well as “the roles and responsibilities” of county government.

County government within the United States has oft been referenced as “The Invisible Government” What better means of mentioning the myriad merits of Essex County’s government, in ways beyond the excessive extolling of, and attention paid, the County’s parks and zoo, than to utilize County Government Week?

While you’re at it, why not settle fairly, and soon, the contract negotiations presently underway with the Unions representing the hard working and dedicated Essex County employees who make our “Invisible Government” not only visible but incontestably invaluable and indispensable.

Sincerely,

David H. Weiner, President

County Government Week

From Monmouth Mall, officials will outline services

April 7, 2008, Asbury Park Press

Monmouth County is marking National County Government Week by providing information and materials about county services from a booth in the food court area of Monmouth Mall, Eatontown, beginning Monday.

First celebrated in 1991, the week marks an annual celebration of county governments and the work of their employees and is also held to raise public awareness and understanding about the roles and responsibilities of more than 3,000 counties nationwide.

The booth at Monmouth Mall will also be in operation Tuesday and Wednesday.

Monmouth County Sheriff's Office personnel will be at the mall in the afternoon Wednesday enrolling children in the Youth Identification Program, which involves preparing wallet-size cards with a photo ID of the child. The child's parents or guardian maintain complete control of the card, but it can be given to local first responders in an emergency to aid in the rapid location and safe return of the child.

Also featured will be a presentation by county Surrogate Rosemarie D. Peters and department employees on Tuesday between 10 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. They will provide information on wills, estates, guardianship and adoptions.

Other information will be distributed at the mall from the County Clerk's Office, County Care Centers, Economic Development and Tourism, Public Information, Human Services, Consumer Affairs, the Mosquito Commission and the Monmouth County Park System.

"National County Government Week is a great opportunity for the public to take a closer look at what we do how we do it and meet some of the county staff behind the services that are being provided. I urge everyone to stop by the county booth," said Freeholder Director Lillian G. Burry.
